Shopping and Fucking

by Mark Ravenhill

Mariy Rosen and his team develop site-specific theater performances. The production Shopping and Fucking is the result of  the collaboration between them and Replica Theatre.

The action in Shopping and Fucking pithily jumps from one location to another, although the actors throughout it all seemingly remain in one and the same reality where buying and selling are the driving forces behind everything. This has been why director Mariy Rosen decided to stage the play in a real store, outside shopping hours.

The realistic environment of the store is a natural backdrop for the play’s action, where the products on sale form the main props used by the actors. The collision between the literal objects and their chimerical use creates new meanings, associations and ironies. The costumes are inspired by Japanese street fashion. In some of the costumes, as well as in the scenography, contemporary technological  media such as mobile phones, tablets and gaming devices, have been incorporated. These smart devices contribute to the visual style of the performance, where they stream video, follow the movement of actors and control the video environment. They help build development of the action and create new points of view.

The play’s host is Brian, who greets the audience at the entrance and sends them on their way to the exit. Brian follows the development of the action and interferes in it. He puts the play’s characters to а test and scrutinises the reactions of the audience. Brian is a demonic master of ceremonies, frightening and repulsive, who carries with him a painful sense of beauty and divinity.

Ravenhill’s text tells the story of a group of youngsters at a moment of change. To continue is painful and difficult, but compulsion and instinct push them forward. Each character in the play is performed by two actors, bringing out internal conflicts. The hero’s reason struggles with his feelings, his logic with his intuition and his stupor with his expressions.

The play is based on the Aristotelian principle of catharsis. It tries to find liberation from shopping and sex through oversaturation. Even without physically doing so, the audience should be able to leave the store at least for a little while.
